History

Initially, the foundation members of Soroptimist International Newtown intended to join the Caribbean's founding club, Soroptimist International Port of Spain. This however was foregone, and the idea to form a new club based in the Newtown area was borne.  SI Newtown was chartered on Saturday 6th November, 2010.  Two years in the making, the road to chartering this club was filled with gaining new sister-friends, the learning of new skills, and of course, memorable occasions.

In the time preceeding the chartering, SI Newtown undertook projects and events, as well as had a presence at Soroptimist International related events as shown:

  • Christmas Caravan (2008 and 2009)
  • Wheelchair Ramp  for a disabled young professional (2008)
  • Turtle-Watching (2009)
  • Chaguanas Charter (2009)
  •  Breast Cancer Walk (2010)
  • SI San F'do Development Day (2010)

Challenges were faced along the way, but were met by eager, determined young women.  These traits however, were not the only factors which led to the formation of SI Newtown.  The club is grateful for the work done and the push given by Mrs. Dennise Demming, as well as the support of Dr. Martha Frederick-Franklin and Mrs. Sandra Dieffenthaller.  These Soroptimists surely exemplified sisterhood whilst cheering us on.
